How Much Sugar a Day is Too Much?
Most Americans consume too much sugar...82 grams per day on average. That works out to be almost 20 teaspoons of sugar per day! Wow! But how much sugar is okay? Well, the World Health Organization recommends that ideally less than 5% of your daily calories should come from added sugar or from natural sugars in honey, syrups and juice. For a 2000 calorie per day diet that works out to around 25 grams of sugar (around 6 teaspoons). To put this in perspective, let’s consider a can of soda. One can of soda contains 11 teaspoons of sugar which is almost double your daily sugar allowance. But don’t trade in your regular soda for a diet soda. Regular consumption of diet soda actually increases your risk of obesity by almost 200%! So what should you do? Drink water! And if you need some flavor drink unsweetened tea instead. Take a good look at your diet. Most people are shocked at how much sugar they consume without even thinking about it. How much sugar have you had today?
