Understanding the impact of inflammaging on our health may be the key to preventing many age-related diseases.

Here are answers to some common questions about inflammaging:

  1. What causes Inflammaging? Inflammaging is caused by chronic low-grade inflammation.  Things that contribute to inflammation in our bodies include pollution, smoking, environmental factors and other dietary habits.  Diets high in sugar, high in red meat and low in vegetables may contribute to inflammaging.

  2. Can you prevent inflammaging?  Some factors like pollution are somewhat out of your control (unless you move to Miami ). We do know that a high glycemic diet (which is a diet high in simple carbs and sugar) increases inflammation in the body.  A low glycemic diet which means choosing foods that do not rapidly raise blood glucose levels has been associated with less inflammation in the body.  Also avoiding red meat and increasing vegetable intake is helpful.

  3. Can you slow the process of inflammaging? Unfortunately, we all have low grade inflammation.  The goal is to manage the factors that you can control.  For example, the one thing we CAN control are the foods we put in our body.

Inflammaging is a new and fascinating approach to look at aging.  I promise you will be hearing more about this hot topic.
