Is Honey Healthier Than Sugar?


We often hear that sugar can be bad for our health. Honey is a popular alternative to sugar, but is it really healthier than sugar?

Honey and sugar are both carbohydrates and both contain fructose and glucose.

Fructose is found in both sweeteners. It is metabolized by the liver and high fructose diets have been associated with obesity, liver disease and diabetes.

Glucose serves as fuel for the body but can be dangerous at high levels. It can lead to hardening of the blood vessels, also known as atherosclerosis.

Although glucose and fructose are found in both sweeteners, refined cane sugar has higher levels of both glucose and fructose. Sugar is 50% fructose and 50% glucose while honey is 40% fructose and 30% glucose.

Honey also contains other healthy ingredients such as water, pollen and minerals like magnesium and potassium.

Sugar is also higher on the glycemic index than honey. This means it raises blood sugar levels more quickly than its healthier counterpart.
