What Causes Grey Hair?
Melanocytes are the cells that make melanin, the dark pigment that gives hair its color. Every hair follicle contains melanocytes that inject pigment (melanin) into the new hairs giving it its color. For this reason, hair color depends on melanocyte stem cells that live at the base of hair follicles.
So, what exactly causes grey hair? When the melanocyte stem cells are lost, new hair that grows turns out to be white. Grey hair happens when there are still some black or natural colored hair left. White hair is when all color is gone leaving only white hair. Greying hair is usually genetic, but smoking can accelerate and increase grey hair. Right now, there are no accepted treatments for grey hair so, for now, hair dye is the best option.
