The Importance of Sun Protection

Summer is almost here and, of course, sun protection is even more important as the UV index rises. Here is what you need to know about sun protection.

What does SPF mean? Sunburn Protection Factor – Measures protection from UVB and does not measure protection from UVA.  UVB rays are the rays that primarily cause damage in the epidermis, or top layer of the skin. UVA rays penetrate skin more deeply than UVB rays, reaching through the epidermis and into the dermis.

SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB.
SPF 30 blocks 97% of UVB.
SPF 45 blocks 98% of UVB.

SPF = protected vs unprotected. For Example: SPF 30 means if it takes you 1 hour to burn without sunscreen (unprotected), it would take you 30 hours to burn with sunscreen (protected). Keep in mind, you can still get sunburned even if it’s cloudy. 🌥

Tip: Studies show regular sunscreen use reduces the risk of melanoma (skin cancer). Wear a minimum of SPF 30 to protect your skin!
