Do you have a dry flaky scalp?

Well that is dandruff, also known as seborrheic dermatitis.  Let’s talk about this common (and sometimes embarrassing) scalp condition.

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory scalp condition that causes scale or flaky dry skin on the scalp. Basically, it is the medical term for dandruff and is an extremely common scalp condition.  Some scientists believe that seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory reaction to a common type of fungus that is normally found on our skin.

For this reason, seborrheic dermatitis can be treated with anti-fungals to reduce the amount of fungus or anti-inflammatories to reduce the inflammation on the scalp.

TREATMENTS:

1. Nizoral (ketoconazole) shampoo is an anti-fungal shampoo often used for seborrheic dermatitis.

2. Cortisone scalp solutions and creams are also helpful.

If you have seborrheic dermatitis that is not getting better with over the counter products, see a dermatologist. There are many simple prescription medications that can treat this common scalp condition.
